In Japan, Shinrin-yoku, or Forest Bathing, is an integral part of preventative care. It is the process of walking slowly through the forest and breathing.
For the past three years, I’ve been working with Nature and looking at how and why we feel better when we spend time in Nature.
If you have been in any of my classes, or participated in the Thrive During the Holidays Conversation Series, or read my blog, you know how much I love to understand the ‘how and why.’ So I’ve spent time energetically looking at how and why Nature can help us feel better.
There are two key pieces. First, Nature is pure Spirit. It doesn’t have the mind, ego or emotions that we have which can take us off course. As an example, an Elm tree never looks at an Oak and says ‘I wish I had those leaves.’ The Elm is complete in and of itself. It simply is. Second, we are actually Nature. Humans evolved from the same microbe that became plant life and through scientific studies, we have learned that many plants carry genetics for human disease states. The natural state of Nature is pure Spirit which is a very high vibration. When we spend time in Nature, because of that kindred connection, we raise our vibration to match Nature – we ‘come home.’ When we raise our vibration it creates an alignment in our own being and in turn we shift into living as Spirit as well. In this state, disease doesn’t exist, negative energy doesn’t exist, we are simply pure high vibration Spirit. That’s how and why Nature helps us heal.
And here’s the great part, Nature is free, it’s all around us and connecting with it is one of the simplest things we can do to support ourselves, simply step out into Nature. If you can’t get out into Nature, it’s been shown that looking at pictures of Nature, or listening to Nature sounds has a similar healing effect.
So whether you sit on a bench and watch the birds, or take a walk through a park, of just go outside and turn your face to the sun, close your eyes and breathe; our rejuvenation, our comfort, our healing is right outside our door.
